Buying pure new wool rugs: the way to the right choice of rug
We first explain the differences and advantages of a natural fibre rug compared to a synthetic rug and then help you to choose the right rug. Our end goal is for the carpet size to be well-fitting, and for the colour to harmonise with your interior style.
Natural or synthetic rug?
Natural rugs - such as a rug made from virgin sheep's wool - have an attractive appearance, are hard-wearing and easy to clean. They also look good with all furnishing styles. Rugs made from natural materials are usually a little more expensive than synthetic rugs, but they are healthy choices and bring a piece of nature into your home.
Most synthetic rugs are cheaper than natural rugs, they are extremely durable and easy to clean, but they are made of artificial fibres. They are also available in different colours and designs.
What are the advantages of a rug made of natural fibres?
Do you have an environmentally conscious mindset? For many people, this is the main reason for choosing a rug made from natural fibres. Because the knowledge that you are bringing a sustainable, healthy material into your home is a major advantage of all natural fibre carpets. Moreover, every natural fibre is a renewable raw material.
If nature is important to you, then pay attention to how the raw materials are obtained and processed. Because even in further processing, often not too few chemicals are used, or questionable methods are used to obtain the raw material. In the case of coloured wool, make sure that the dyeing process used is as harmless as possible. Of course, this does not matter for carpets made of undyed wool.
When buying a rug made of virgin wool, you should also pay attention to the origin of the wool. Avoiding too long transport routes is also an important environmental aspect. If the wool used is mostly European wool, this is a good sign.
Pure new wool rugs are natural fibre rugs that are very durable and often even last for generations. Should you ever have to dispose of a sheep's wool rug, you can do so with a clear conscience, as sheep's wool can be 100% recycled back into the biological cycle.
Which rugs made of natural fibres are available?
There are many different natural materials from which rugs are made today. There is a difference between rugs made from natural fibres of plant origin and those that are of animal origin, as is the case with wool rugs, for example.
Each of these basic materials has its own individual properties and you should first consider the intended use of the rug when choosing your new rug:
Cotton is considered conventional wool, is light, has a soft surface and is absorbent
Sheep's wool is warm, self-cleaning, and sound absorbing but heavier than cotton
Silk is luxurious and beautiful, but it is quite delicate and can tear easily
Linen is strong and durable, but it is quite coarse and scratchy
Jute is lightweight, durable and stain resistant
Sisal is made from the fibres of the agave tree and is a good choice for outdoor use.
Hemp is strong, durable, and breathable
Natural fibre rugs are usually softer than synthetic ones. And that means they wear out more quickly. However, some types of natural fibres are more robust than others. Sheep's wool, jute, hemp, sisal and linen, for example, are among the most durable natural fibres.
Rugs made of other, more unusual natural fibres such as bamboo, chenille or even coconut are also available.
What is the difference to rugs made of
synthetic fibres?
Synthetic fiber rugs are made by spinning man-made yarns such as polyester, nylon or acrylic yarns. Synthetic polypropylene yarns are also fibers used in rugs.
These synthetic fibers are generally tough, easy to clean and stronger than natural fibers. However, the comparison shows that a rug made of hard-wearing natural fibers can easily keep up with everyday use. Wool rugs are especially recognized for their durability and are also ideal for regularly used areas such as hallways or entrance areas.
One advantage is that most synthetic fiber rugs - if size allows - can be washed in the washing machine.
However, there are two disadvantages that you should also consider when buying a rug:
One disadvantage of synthetic fibers is their tendency to become brittle over time. They can tear or break if they get too hot or too cold.
Moreover, synthetic fibers tend to attract dirt and dust particles. Therefore, they need to be cleaned regularly.
New Wool Rug
As you might have guessed, our hearts beat for rugs made from pure new sheep's wool. Pure new wool is our hobbyhorse and our business. Here are some of the advantages of a pure new wool rug:
Wool carpets are very comfortable to walk on and have a sound-absorbing function. For this reason, they are often chosen for living rooms and bedrooms.
Wool rugs are also hard-wearing and can withstand heavy foot traffic without showing signs of wear. This makes them - besides the health aspect - an ideal companion in children's playrooms or even kindergartens.
Sheep's wool rugs have a unique self-cleaning function, which they owe to the natural property of the sheep's wool fiber. They are therefore very easy to clean and look fresh for years with the right care.
Furthermore, wool fiber is beneficial to indoor climates: sheep's wool rugs thus help to maintain or even improve the air quality in your home or office because the fiber binds formaldehyde, for example.
These are just a few of the most important characteristics of a pure new wool rug. We could keep on adding to the long list of advantages! In addition to its natural properties, the raw material is played with from an artistic point of view: there are sheep's wool rugs in numerous colours, patterns and weaves.
Room by room: rug size and colour
How do you choose a rug for your home? Whether it's a pure new wool rug or another type of rug, you should consider the two factors of rug size and then colour.
How to determine the right rug size
The size of the rug depends on the size of the room in which it will be placed. You need to consider whether there is space for a rug in front of the sofa so it can be placed under the coffee table and behind the sofa in case a sideboard is placed there.
Rug in the living room
You have several options for the living room: you can place a rug that takes up the entire living area, or place it in front of the sofa, or place it so that only the front legs of the couch are on the rug and thus creates a small living island. Depending on the type of placement, there are also different ways to calculate the ideal rug size for the living room.
As a rule of thumb, the rug must always be larger than your sofa. So if you want to place a rug in front of or under your sofa, you need to measure the length of the sofa. To determine the correct width, subtract 20-30% from the length. If in doubt: it's better to go with longer rather than shorter, it always looks more harmonious.
A bedroom rug
There are several ways to place a rug in the bedroom: you can choose a large rug that lies under the bed and cozily peaks out at the sides. However, runners are most used as bedroom rugs.
Between the bed and the wall on the side of the bed, runners are usually placed to provide warm feet when you get up. Side runners are usually shorter than the bed length. They have a typical runner width of 60 to 90 cm.
You want to get more creative? Here we have compiled even more options for placing bedroom rugs and measuring them correctly.
Rug in the dining room
In the dining room or dining area, rugs are most often placed under the dining table. It’s important that the rug be large enough so that the edge of the rug does not form a hurdle when standing up or sitting down.
The rule of thumb here: on one side of the table with chairs, the rug should be about one meter wider than the table, so that the dining island does not look cramped. If there are no chairs on one side of the table, the rug should be about 50 cm wider than the table.
Made to fit: Virgin wool rugs made to measure
If you want to buy a pure new wool rug but your room measurements are challenging to work with, you can also order a rug made to measure. The loom is adjusted so that the rug is woven exactly to your specifications.
Please note that custom-made rugs are always made to order and you do not have the right to return them if you do not like them. We therefore recommend that you order arug sample first. This gives you the opportunity to test the quality and let the weaving pattern work its magic on you before you make a final decision.
Of course, you also have the right to expect that the rug corresponds to your order, that it is not broken and that it does not contain any weaving faults. Should this occur despite a thorough quality control, you can always make a complaint regarding these points.
How to choose the right
colour for pure new wool rugs
Colour plays an important role when choosing a wool rug. And when it comes to colour, everyone has different taste. A study by the University of California found that red is one of the most popular colours among women. Green is another favourite, orange and yellow are also very popular. Blue, on the other hand, is not always a favourite for women.
Besides personal preference, it is also important that the colourful wool harmonises with the rest of the room. The following tips can help you find the perfect combination between carpet, wall and furniture.
Choose a neutral colour palette as a base rather than bold colours. Neutral colours do not stand out too much and can be easily combined with other objects in the room.
The interplay between rug and walls is perfect if you paint the walls in the same colour as the rug. Avoid overly strong contrasts between wall and rug. If you want to use different colours, paint the walls a little darker and choose a rug in a lighter shade. For example, if the walls are a darker shade of grey, the rug should be light grey.
Make sure that the rug contrasts well with the floor covering. For example, if the floor is made of dark wood, you should avoid a dark brown rug.
If you want your living room to stand out, you can opt for a bold and colourful design. Patterned designer rugs made of wool, for example, are eye-catching. Patterns in rugs are usually made by weaving, tufting or printing. When we weave a sheepskin rug, we interweave different grains to create different weaving patterns and an exciting textured surface.
Differences in rug cleaning
Whether it is a wool rug or any other material, over time dirt and dust will accumulate on your rug and form a layer on the surface. This causes the rug to look dirty or even stained.
To prevent this, rugs of any kind must be cleaned regularly. Rug cleaning should be done even more often if you keep pets. But even without pets, we recommend vacuuming your rug once a week.
Tips which apply to all rugs:
For routine cleaning, beating or vacuuming is enough. For house dust allergy sufferers, this is the most important step.
If you use detergent, always test a small area first that is not easily visible. For example, a spot that is normally covered by the couch or dining table.
If stains appear, treat the stain as quickly as possible with carbonated mineral water, which performed best in our stain tests.
When it comes to stains, the differences in cleaning the various types of carpet become apparent. Many rugs made of synthetic materials can also be cleaned in the washing machine, but we do not recommend this for most natural fibers. With synthetic materials, of course, this only works if the rugs are small enough to fit in the washing machine.
No matter whether sheep's wool, jute or hemp, such chemicals are not good for any natural fiber nor are they usually necessary. Furthermore, you avoid the danger that the agent is too strong and bleaches or damages your rug.
For stubborn and complicated stains, we really recommend that you consult a rug cleaning expert so that your rug doesn’t come to a tragic end.
Our motto when cleaning natural fiber rugs is always to avoid using strong chemicals.
Five tips for buying rugs
Do you know which room you want a rug for and are you clear about the size and colour? Have you also thought about your preferred rug style? Should it be more traditional or more modern?
If you are aware of all these points, you may go from one item to another in your search for a suitable rug. Here are a few tips to help you choose the right rug for your home:
1. Buying a rug online saves time and is often cheaper than going to a shop. Often supposed discounts are offered by dealers, but these prices are often not real bargain prices, because the supposed discount is often added several times beforehand. So, beware of information such as -70% or -80% because the former original price was then often simply set higher.
2. Especially for expensive Persian rugs, many manufacturers offer certificates of authenticity, but these are not always reliable. Always check manufacturer's certificates for authenticity!
3. When shopping online, take advantage of the option to order rug samples, if available, as this gives you the opportunity to check the feel and look of your rug, as you cannot view and test it in its entirety as you would in a shop.
4. Many online shops charge extra for freight and returns. This can be quite expensive for larger rugs and cause considerable additional expenses. Therefore, always check the final price of your rug before ordering.
5. Are you unsure about the size, do you have questions about the material or the warranty? Even if you order online, don't hesitate to ask questions. Whether by phone, email or chat bot, any reputable manufacturer or retailer will be happy to answer any questions you may have about your rug purchase.
Whether you have chosen a pure new wool rug or another type of rug, nothing should stand in the way of your successful rug purchase!
